Network Engineer – Mainframe Upgrade
Contract: 6 months (potential for extension) 
Location: Remote

 

Overview: Our client is seeking a skilled Network Engineer to join its team in supporting a critical mainframe upgrade initiative. This role will collaborate closely with the project team to architect, implement, and maintain the network infrastructure essential for the success of the upgrade project. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in Cisco networking technologies, legacy protocols such as SNA, routing and switching, as well as hands-on experience with Cisco, Nexus NXOS, and Catalyst devices. Knowledge of routing protocols like EIGRP, Layer 2 protocols, spine tree architecture, and familiarity with firewalls, specifically Palo Alto and FortiGate, are also desirable.

Responsibilities:

  1. Network Design and Architecture:

    • Collaborate with the project team to design and architect the network infrastructure required for the mainframe upgrade initiative.
    • Ensure the network design aligns with project requirements and industry best practices.
  2. Implementation and Configuration:

    • Deploy and configure Cisco, Nexus NXOS, and Catalyst devices to support the mainframe upgrade project.
    • Implement routing protocols such as EIGRP, Layer 2 protocols, and spine tree architecture as needed.
    • Configure and manage firewalls, including Palo Alto and FortiGate, to ensure network security and compliance.
  3. Troubleshooting and Support:

    • Provide ongoing support for network-related issues throughout the mainframe upgrade project.
    • Troubleshoot network problems and perform root cause analysis to identify and resolve issues promptly.
    • Collaborate with other team members to address network-related challenges and optimize performance.
  4. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate documentation of network configurations, changes, and troubleshooting procedures.
    • Generate regular reports on network performance, uptime, and security to stakeholders and project leadership.
  5. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with the larger project team to ensure seamless integration of the network infrastructure with other project components.
    • Communicate effectively with project stakeholders to provide updates on network progress, challenges, and resolutions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Minimum of [X] years of experience as a Network Engineer or similar role.
  • Extensive experience with Cisco networking technologies and legacy protocols such as SNA.
  • Proficiency in routing and switching technologies, including hands-on experience with Cisco, Nexus NXOS, and Catalyst devices.
  • Strong understanding of routing protocols like EIGRP, Layer 2 protocols, and spine tree architecture.
  • Familiarity with firewall technologies, particularly Palo Alto and FortiGate.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to perform root cause analysis.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work well within a team environment.
  • Relevant certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent are a plus.
