Firewall Engineer – Branch Upgrade Project

Contract: 6 months (possibility of extension) 
Location: Remote

Overview: We are seeking a skilled Firewall Engineer to join our team in support of a branch upgrade project. This role will focus on the migration from end-of-life Cisco equipment to Palo Alto firewalls in branch locations, as well as the replacement of outdated Cisco routers in the datacenter with new Cisco models. The ideal candidate will have expertise in Palo Alto and Cisco Meraki switches, with a strong background in firewall configuration and experience with Cisco routers. This role will play a crucial part in ensuring the seamless transition to modernized network infrastructure across branch locations.

Responsibilities:

  1. Firewall Migration and Deployment:

    • Lead the migration effort from end-of-life Cisco equipment to Palo Alto firewalls in branch locations.
    • Design and implement firewall configurations to meet branch security and connectivity requirements.
    • Ensure proper integration of Palo Alto firewalls with existing network infrastructure and systems.
  2. Cisco Router Replacement:

    • Replace end-of-life Cisco routers in the datacenter with new Cisco models to improve performance and reliability.
    • Configure and deploy Cisco routers, including the migration of existing configurations and ensuring compatibility with network services.
  3. Branch Network Upgrade:

    • Upgrade branch network equipment, including Cisco Meraki switches and Cisco routers, to modernize network infrastructure.
    • Replace outdated Cisco 1921 routers with newer Cisco models, such as the 8200L series, to support enhanced functionality and performance.
  4. Configuration and Optimization:

    • Configure firewall and router settings to optimize network performance, security, and reliability.
    • Collaborate with network and security teams to implement best practices and ensure compliance with security policies and regulations.
  5. Testing and Troubleshooting:

    • Conduct thorough testing of firewall and router configurations to validate functionality and identify any issues or vulnerabilities.
    • Troubleshoot network problems and provide timely resolution to minimize downtime and disruptions.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate documentation of firewall and router configurations, changes, and troubleshooting procedures.
    • Generate reports on network performance, security incidents, and upgrade progress for project stakeholders and leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience as a Firewall Engineer or similar role.
  • Strong expertise in Palo Alto firewalls and Cisco Meraki switches.
  • Proficiency in firewall configuration and deployment, with hands-on experience in Palo Alto and Cisco environments.
  • Experience with Cisco router configuration and deployment, including router replacement projects.
  • Familiarity with branch network infrastructure and connectivity requirements.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose and resolve network issues.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work well within a team environment.
  • Relevant certifications such as Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Engineer (PCNSE) and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) are a plus.
